What is a natural gemstone?
A natural gemstone formed in the earth. It was not grown in a laboratory and it is not a glass or synthetic imitation.
Some natural stones are heated to improve their colour or clarity. This is common in the gem trade and is accepted as long as it is stated clearly. Each of our listings tells you whether a stone is heated or unheated.
Gemstones we sell
Our range changes as stones come and go. Typical gemstones include sapphire (blue, pink, yellow and star sapphire), ruby, spinel, chrysoberyl and cat's eye, garnet and amethyst. Browse what is in stock now in our online shop and filter by type, colour, shape, carat and price.
How to choose a gemstone
- Colour: the most important quality. Look at how rich and even it is, not only the name of the colour.
- Clarity: how many tiny inclusions the stone has, and whether you can see them with the eye.
- Cut: a well-cut stone reflects light evenly and looks lively.
- Carat: the weight of the stone. Two stones with the same carat weight can look different in size.
- Origin: where the stone was found. Sri Lanka is well known for sapphires.
- Treatment: whether the stone is heated or unheated.
- Certificate: a report from a laboratory describing the stone.
Certified gems
Every stone we sell comes with certification, and we write down its details so you can compare one stone with another. If you are not sure what to look for, ask us. We are happy to explain each stone and what it means.
